"Social listening" and "media monitoring" often get used as if they mean the same thing.

What media monitoring is
Media monitoring tracks where your brand is mentioned across channels: online and print publications, TV and radio, and social platforms.

What social listening is
Social listening looks at the wider conversation, not only your brand: themes, sentiment, emotion, and what audiences actually care about.
Its job is insight and strategy. It helps you spot a trend or a shift before it shows up in your own mentions.
