How to Track a Competitor's Marketing Strategy with Social Listening (GCC, 2026)
You do not need a leak to understand a competitor's marketing strategy. Most of it plays out in public: the campaigns they run, the influencers they pay, and what their customers praise and complain about.
Social listening is how you read that signal in the GCC, in the language it actually happens in. Here is a practical way to do it.
1. Start with share of voice
Compare how much of the category conversation you own versus each rival over time. A sudden jump usually means a launch or a campaign. The shape of the line tells you who is setting the agenda.
2. Map their campaigns as they happen
Track the hashtags, slogans and creative a competitor pushes, and which channels they lean on. You learn their calendar and their bets without waiting for a case study months later.
3. Read sentiment, not just volume
Volume tells you they are loud. Sentiment tells you whether it is working. Keep sentiment and emotion separate: a spike in mentions can be a backlash, not a win, and the two look identical on a reach chart.
4. See who amplifies them
Find the influencers, journalists and pages driving a rival's reach. That map is often more useful than the campaign itself, and it shows you partners you may be missing.
5. Find the gaps they leave
The complaints and topics a competitor ignores are your opening. Recurring frustration with their service or pricing is a message you can answer directly.
What actually decides it in the GCC
Competitor benchmarking is only as accurate as your read of the conversation, and in the GCC most of it happens in Saudi, Emirati, Egyptian and other dialects, plus Franco-Arabic. Miss those and your share-of-voice chart is built on the English slice, which is a small and unrepresentative part of the real picture.
dima reads that conversation Arabic-first, so the benchmark reflects the whole market rather than the fraction that happened in English.
Are you benchmarking your competitor's real GCC share of voice, or only the part that happened in English?
